This medicine is available without prescription, but you still need to use Cough Nurse Night Time Syrup carefully to get the best results from it.

1. What Cough Nurse Night Time Syrup does
Cough Nurse Night Time Syrup is used for the relief of the symptoms of dry, tickly and unproductive coughs. The medicine contains two active ingredients. Diphenhydramine hydrochloride is an antihistamine which dries up a runny nose and aids restful sleep. Pholcodine is a cough suppressant that helps relieve dry or tickly coughs. Cough Nurse Night Time Syrup also helps relieve a sore throat.
Check before you take Cough Nurse Night Time Syrup Do not take Cough Nurse Night Time Syrup:
- if you have ever had an allergic reaction to diphenhydramine hydrochloride, pholcodine or to any of the other ingredients (listed in Section 6)
- if you have liver or respiratory problems and inherited metabolic conditions
- if you have taken monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) prescribed for depression in the last two weeks
- if you are under 12 years
Do not take with any other flu, cold or decongestant product.
Take special care with Cough Nurse Night Time Syrup:
- Do not drive or operate machinery. This medicine may cause drowsiness.
- Do not drink alcohol while using Cough Nurse Night Time Syrup.
- Cough Nurse Night Time Syrup contains 5% v/v ethanol (alcohol), i.e. up to 0.8 g per dose, equivalent to 20 ml of beer, 8 ml of wine. This could be harmful if you suffer from alcoholism. This should also be considered if you are pregnant or
breast feeding, in children and high-risk groups such as patients with liver disease or epilepsy
- If you have high blood pressure, heart, kidney or liver problems, epilepsy, glaucoma, bronchitis, asthma or other similar respiriatory problems, enlarged prostate, difficulty passing urine, or have an obstruction in your intestine.
- If you are on a sodium controlled diet. Each 20 ml dose contains 41 mg of sodium.
- If you have diabetes mellitus. Each 20 ml dose contains 9 g of sucrose (sugar). Ask your doctor before you take this medicine:
- if you have been told by your doctor that you have an intolerance to some sugars.
If you are taking other medicines
Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if you are taking any prescribed medicines; particularly water tablets (diuretics); medicines to treat high blood pressure; medicines for anixety, depression or other mental health conditions; medicines which may cause a dry mouth; medicines which make you drowsy or help you sleep; or if you are addicted to drugs or have been told in the past.
Pregnancy and breast feeding
Do not take take Cough Nurse Night Time Syrup if you are pregnant or breast feeding.
2. How to take Cough Nurse Night Time Syrup
Adults (including the elderly) and children aged 12 years and over:
Fill the measuring cup to the 20 ml mark. Take one 20 ml dose (four teaspoonfuls) just before going to bed.
- Do not take for more than 5 days unless your doctor tell you to.
- Do not take more than the recommended dose.
If you take too much
Contact your doctor or casualty department. Do not drive if you have taken too much Cough Nurse Night Time Syrup.
If your symptoms persist for more than 5 days, see your doctor.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, Cough Nurse Night Time Syrup can have side effects, but not everyone gets them:
The following side effects may occur. Tell your doctor if you get them.
- Skin rashes and severe allergic reactions such as a tingling sensation, breathing difficulties and swelling of the face, lips and throat.
- Nausea [feeling sick], vomiting [being sick], drowsiness, stomach pain, dryness of the mouth, difficulty passing urine, diarrhoea or consitpation.
- Headache, blurred vision and ringing in the ears.
- Irritability, sleep disturbance, elation or depression
If you do get any side effects, even those not mentioned in this leaflet, tell your doctor or pharmacist.
5. How to store Cough Nurse Night Time Syrup Keep out of the reach and sight of children.
Do not store above 25°C.
Do not use this medicine after the ‘EXP’ date shown on the pack.

Active ingredients Each 20ml dose contains Diphenhydramine Hydrochloride 50 mg and Pholcodine 15 mg.
Other ingrediants Hyetellose (Natrosol 250 HX), glycerol (E 422), syrup sucrose (contains invert sugar), citric acid monohydrate, sodium citrate, sodium benzoate (e 211), quinoline yellow (E 104), Blue 12401 (E 131), ethanol, grenadine flavour (contains propylene glycol), purified water.
The bottle contains 150 ml.
