1.    WHAT DICOBALT EDETATE INJECTION IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR

Dicobalt Edetate Injection 300mg is an antidote for cyanide poisoning which must be treated as quickly as possible. It is usually only given when the patient is, or becoming, unconscious.

Dicobalt Edetate is a life-saving injection and will not be given as a precautionary measure.

2.    BEFORE YOU ARE GIVEN DICOBALT EDETATE INJECTION

This solution must NOT be given if:

•    the poisoning is so mild that the patient is fully conscious,

•    the patient’s condition is not due to cyanide poisoning - the injection on its own is toxic.

Taking other medicines

There is no information available about the interaction of this injection with other medicines.

Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.

Pregnancy and breast-feeding

There is no information available about the use of this injection in pregnant or breast-feeding women.

Important information about some of the ingredients in Dicobalt Edetate Injection Dextrose is an ingredient in the solution (4g per ampoule). This should be taken into consideration in patients with diabetes mellitus.


3. HOW DICOBALT EDETATE INJECTION WILL BE GIVEN


This solution will be given by slow injection into a vein by a doctor or nurse.

Oxygen should be given at the same time.

Intensive support therapy will also be given at the same time.

For adults and the elderly: one 300mg ampoule is usually given over 1 to 5 minutes. If no response is seen, another ampoule may be given, up to a maximum of three ampoules.

For children: there is no clinical experience in children; however, the dose required will be calculated according to the amount of cyanide ingested.

After the injection you may also be given an intravenous (into a vein) glucose infusion.

If you are concerned about your dose of Dicobalt Edetate Injection

As this medicine is administered by a health professional it is unlikely that you will be given too much, or miss a dose.

If you have any further questions on the use of this product, ask the doctor or nurse.

4.    POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS

Like other medicines, Dicobalt Edetate Injection can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.

The initial side effects that may be seen are:

•    vomiting, feeling faint (due to a drop in blood pressure), rapid heartbeat after which the patient will recover.

If you/the patient have an allergic reaction to the medicine, tell the doctor or nurse immediately. Symptoms are:

•    swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue,

•    chest pain, irregular heartbeat,

•    rash, sweating.

If the patient has been given too much Dicobalt Edetate Injection, the allergic reaction symptoms may occur.

If any of the side effects gets serious, or if you notice any side effects not listed in this leaflet, please tell your doctor or nurse.

5.    HOWTO STORE DICOBALT EDETATE INJECTION

Keep out of the reach and sight of children.

Store below 25°C. Store in the original package and protect from light.

Do not use the solution after the expiry date printed on the ampoule and the carton.

The solution should only be used if it is clear and the container is not damaged. It should be used immediately. Any unused solution must be discarded.

Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. The doctor or nurse will dispose of this medicine. These measures will help to protect the environment.

What Dicobalt Edetate Injection contains

The active substance is Dicobalt Edetate 300mg per ampoule (15mg/ml).

The other ingredients are dextrose monohydrate and water for injections (see end of Section 2 for further information on dextrose).

What Dicobalt Edetate Injection looks like and contents of the pack

The solution for injection is a rose-violet coloured sterile solution.

The solution is packaged in a sterile 20 ml glass ampoule in packs of six.
