1. WHAT FOLIC ACID TABLETS ARE AND WHATTHEY ARE USED FOR
Folic Acid belongs to the vitamin B group.
Folic Acid Tablets are useful for:-
• The treatment and prevention of certain types of anaemia, including pernicious anaemia
• The treatment and prevention of folic acid deficiency (for example caused by the administration of phenytoin for epilepsy).
2. BEFORE YOU TAKE FOLIC ACID TABLETS
.Do not take Folic Acid Tablets if you:
• Are hypersensitive (allergic) to folic acid or any of
I the other ingredients of folic acid tablets.
p Have an untreated vitamin B12 deficiency such as in certain anaemias and lifelong vegetarians
• Are suffering a malignant (cancerous) disease.
Take special care with Folic Acid Tablets
Consult your doctor before taking Folic Acid tablets if ^ou:
• Have a type of cancer that is dependant on folic 1 acid
In particular tell your doctor if you are taking any of the following: '
• Phenytoin, phenobarbital and primidone foij epilepsy
• Chloramphenicol and co-trimoxazole used to1
• Sulfasalazine used in the treatment of Crohn's, Disease and ulcerative colitis
• Methotrexate used to treat certain cancers and|
Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice if you are pregnant, planning on becoming pregnant or are breastfeeding.
Driving and using machines
These tablets should not affect your driving or abilityl to use machinery, however if you are affected do notj drive or operate machinery as your alertness may be impaired. I
3. HOWTOTAKE FOLIC ACID TABLETS
For the treatment of anaemias:
Adults and the elderly:
5mg (1 tablet) per day, for up to 4 months, with| hydroxycobalamin by injection. ,
If you are suffering with malabsorption, up to 15mg (3| tablets) a day may be prescribed. ,
^or the treatment and prevention of folic acid deficiency or in kidney dialysis:
Keep out of the reach and sight of children I
Adults and the elderly:
6. FURTHER INFORMATION
|5mg (1 tablet) a day OR 5mg (1 tablet) a week may be prescribed.
|lf you stop taking Folic Acid Tablets
|Do not stop taking folic acid tablets without consulting your doctor.
|lf you take more Folic Acid Tablets than you should
flhis medicine is to be taken when prescribed by the ploctor. If you take too many tablets by mistake contact your nearest hospital casualty department or tell your doctor immediately. Take your tablet pack ^ith you.
I|f you forget to take Folic Acid Tables
ilf you have forgotten to take a dose, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Take your next dose at the normal time. If you have trouble remembering |to take the tablets, tell your doctor or pharmacist.
What Folic Acid tablets contain:
Folic Acid tablets 5mg contain the activi substance folic acid 5mg in each tablet.
The other ingredients are: dicalcium phosphate, starch, sodium lauryl sulphate and magnesium1 stearate. |
What Folic Acid tablets look like and contents oJ the pack: |
Each tablet contains 5mg of the active substance, folic acid.
4. POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS
.Like all medicines, Folic Acid tablets can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. If you Experience any of the following then STOP taking .Folic Acid Tablets and contact a doctor IMMEDIATELY:
Folic Acid 5mg Tablets are packed into packs of 50,, 100,250,500,1,000 and 5,000 tablets.

Rare (affecting less than 1 in 1,000 patients)
• Allergic reaction (hypersensitivity) with symptoms of an itchy/red skin, rash, swelling of I the face, lips, tongue or throat or difficulty breathing or swallowing, shock (cold sweaty I skin, weak pulse, dry mouth, dilated pupils), p Stomach and intestines: loss of appetite, feeling sick, a bloated feeling, wind.
5. STORING FOLIC ACID TABLETS
Check the expiry date printed on the label or side of |the box. Do not use after the expiry date stated on the label.
Do not store above 25°C. Store in the original [package.
In case of any visible signs of deterioration, you should discard the package.
|Medicines should not be disposed of via waste water .or household waste. Ask you pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These |measures help to protect the environment.
