5 - HOW TO STORE PHYTOCOLD
Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the bottle after “Exp”. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month. Store in the original package.
Store below 30°C. Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help protect the environment.

What PHYTOCOLD contains
Each hard capsule contains 250 mg of Echinacea purpurea root (Echinacea purpurea (L.) Moench).
The other ingredient is hypromellose (capsule shell).
What PHYTOCOLD looks like and contents of the pack
Each pack contains 45 or 150 colourless and transparent hard capsules containing clear yellow to beige powder.
Not all pack sizes may be marketed.

1 - WHAT PHYTOCOLD IS AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR
PHYTOCOLD is a traditional herbal medicinal product used to relieve the symptoms of the common cold and influenza-type infections.
This is based on traditional use only.
2 - BEFORE YOU TAKE PHYTOCOLD
DO NOT TAKE PHYTOCOLD IF
- You are allergic to:
• Echinacea or plants of the same family (Asteraceae / Compositae) such as daisies, marigolds or artichokes,
• the other ingredient of this product (see section 6 of this leaflet for further information).
WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS
- You suffer from:
• frequent allergic reactions such as hives (urticaria), eczema, asthma
• the infection tuberculosis,
• connective tissue disease with formation of clumps of cells (sarcoidosis) mainly occuring in the lymph nodes, lungs and liver,
• auto-immune diseases such as inflammation of the connective tissue (collagenosis) or multiple sclerosis,
• conditions which decrease your natural response to infections (e.g. HIV infection or AIDS),
• blood disorders involving the white blood cell system such as low white cell count due to bone marrow disorders (agranulocytosis) or blood cell cancer (leukaemia).
- You are:
• already taking immunosuppressant medication such as ciclosporin or methotrexate,
• on therapy to reduce your natural response to infection (immunosuppression e.g. chemotherapy or radiotherapy for cancer, history of organ or bone marrow transplant).
- You are under 12 years old.
Take special care with this product:
• If there is a family history of allergic reactions.
• Because Echinacea can trigger autoimmune diseases.
TAKING OTHER MEDICINES
Tell your doctor, pharmacist or qualified healthcare practitioner if you are taking, or have recently taken any other medicines including any obtained without a prescription.
PREGNANCY AND BREAST-FEEDING
Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
3 - HOW TO TAKE PHYTOCOLD
Always take this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your doctor, pharmacist or qualified healthcare practitioner has told you. Check with your doctor, pharmacist or qualified healthcare practitioner if you are not sure.
For oral use only
DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE
Adults, elderly and children over 12 years: Take 1 to 2 capsules with a glass of water before meals 3 times daily. Start at the first signs of a common cold. Do not use for more than 10 days.
If symptoms worsen or persist for more than 10 days or you get a high fever, consult your doctor or a qualified healthcare practitioner. This product is not recommended for use in children under 12 years of age.
IF YOU TAKE MORE PHYTOCOLD THAN YOU SHOULD
If you take more than the recommended dose and feel ill, talk to your doctor and take this leaflet with you.
IF YOU FORGET TO TAKE PHYTOCOLD
Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose and continue to take the usual dose at the usual time.
IF YOU STOP TAKING PHYTOCOLD
You can stop taking PHYTOCOLD at any time. If you have any further questions on the use of this medicine, ask you doctor, pharmacist or qualified healthcare practitioner.
4 - POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS
Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. The frequency of the side effects is not known.
The following side effects can occur when using PHYTOCOLD:
- Allergic reactions such as swelling, hives or rashes
- Swelling of the skin due to fluid
- Swelling of the facial area (Quincke’s oeadema)
- Shrinking of the airways of the lungs with obstruction (bronchospasm)
- Asthma and life threatening reactions (anaphylactic shock).
Echinacea can trigger allergic reactions in patients who have a tendency to allergic reactions. Stop taking the product immediately if you experience any allergic reaction.
Association with auto-immune diseases has been reported such as:
- Inflammation of the brain and spinal cord (disseminated encephalitis)
- Painful lumps on the shins (erythema nodosum)
- Low blood platelet count (immunothrombocytopenia)
- Destruction of blood cells by antibodies (Evans Syndrome)
- Dryness in the mouth and eye with kidney tubular dysfunction (Sjogren Syndrome). A decrease in the number of white blood cells (leucopenia) may occur in long-term use (more than 8 weeks).
