1. What Simple Eye Ointment is and what it is used for
The ingredients of Simple Eye Ointment are lubricants and emollients (softeners). It is used to lubricate and protect the eye in a wide range of conditions such as inflammation or injury to the cornea (the front surface of the eye) or during surgery. It is also used at night for dry and sticky eyes, and to soften and remove crusts from the eyelids and around the eyes in blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids).
2. Before you use Simple Eye Ointment Do not use Simple Eye Ointment
• if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to yellow soft paraffin, liquid paraffin or particularly wool fat (lanolin)
• when wearing contact lenses
Take special care with Simple Eye Ointment
• Your vision will become blurred for a short time (5-10 minutes) after using the ointment, and you should wait until you can see clearly again before driving or operating machinery
Use in children and the elderly
There are no age restrictions for using this eye ointment.
Using with other medicines
This ointment may be used during treatment with other medicines.
Pregnancy and breast-feeding
This ointment may be used during pregnancy and breast-feeding.
Important information about some of the ingredients of Simple Eye Ointment
It contains wool fat (also known as lanolin) which may cause allergic reaction in some people.
3. How to use Simple Eye Ointment
Always follow the instructions given by your doctor or pharmacist.
• Wash your hands before and after applying the ointment. It is important to keep the eye clean.
• Sit down in front of a mirror so that you can see what you are doing.
• Gently pull down the lower eyelid and carefully squeeze a ribbon of ointment about half an inch (1 centimetre) in the gap between the lower eyelid and the eye.
• Try not to let the tip of the tube touch any part of the eye. Now release the lower lid.
• After you have used the ointment replace the cap on the tube.
• Repeat the application each morning and night, or as directed by your doctor.
If you forget to use the ointment
Use it as soon as you remember and keep on as before.
If you accidentally swallow the ointment
If you feel unwell, contact your doctor, taking the tube or carton with you.
If you have any further questions on the use of this product, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
4. Possible side effects
Like all medicines, Simple Eye Ointment can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them. Apart from temporary blurred vision (see Section 2) and hypersensitivity (allergic reaction), no side effects are expected.
If blurred vision continues and becomes a problem or you develop any new eye irritation you should contact your doctor or pharmacist.
If you have any unusual or unexpected side effects associated with the use of this medicine, or if your condition does not improve please tell your doctor or pharmacist.
5. How to store Simple Eye Ointment Keep out of the reach and sight of children.
Do not use the ointment after the expiry date which is printed on the carton and the crimp seal of the tube. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
Do not store this ointment above 25°C. Keep it out of direct sunlight.
Once you have opened the tube it should be discarded after 4 weeks.
Medicines should not be disposed of via wastewater or household waste. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medicines no longer required. These measures will help to protect the environment.
6. Further information What Simple Eye Ointment contains
The ingredients are yellow soft paraffin 80%w/w, liquid paraffin 10%w/w and wool fat (lanolin) 10%w/w.
What Simple Eye Ointment looks like and contents of the pack
Each tube contains 4 grams of sterile eye ointment. The product is sterile until the seal on the tube is broken. The straw coloured ointment is see-through.
